Supporting the Next Generation: Discover How Fondation Gautier Capuçon is Shaping the Future of Classical Music

Supporting the next generation of artists is essential to ensuring the continuity and renewal of the cultural landscape. In the field of classical music, this support is particularly vital at the early stages of a musician’s career, where access to professional opportunities can determine long-term artistic development and visibility.

Established in 2022 under the aegis of the Fondation de France, the Fondation Gautier Capuçon was created to address this critical gap. Created by internationally renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon, the foundation is dedicated to supporting exceptional emerging musicians by providing them with the resources and platforms needed to take their first steps onto the global stage.

Through a carefully structured programme combining scholarships, performance opportunities, and recording projects, the foundation not only nurtures artistic development but also facilitates meaningful connections between young talents, established artists, and international audiences. In doing so, it contributes to sustaining the vitality and transmission of classical music for generations to come.To gain further insight into the foundation’s mission and impact, we had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Gautier Capuçon.

The Fondation Gautier Capuçon was born out of a desire to support young musicians during a time of global uncertainty. Could you share how the foundation’s mission has evolved since its creation and the impact it hopes to have on the next generation of artists? Can you share a story or a specific example of a laureate’s journey where these qualities truly shone through, illustrating the profound impact of Fondation Gautier Capuçon’s support?

The Fondation Gautier Capuçon was created in 2022 from a very personal conviction: that music is a living heritage, transmitted from stage to stage and from generation to generation.

Throughout my own journey as a musician, I was fortunate to be guided, encouraged, and inspired by extraordinary mentors. Creating the foundation felt like a natural way to give back. It was also a way to support the next generation of artists.

Our approach is structured around three pillars: scholarships that allow young artists to continue their training in Europe and beyond,; access to the stage, through more than a hundred concert opportunities each year in prestigious venues and festivals, as well as in unexpected settings or for audiences who may not easily have access to live music; and the opportunity to record a first album through our series “La Fondation Gautier Capuçon présente” with Warner Classics.

We have seen that when musicians are given trust, visibility, and the chance to perform, they grow immensely. The feedback from our laureates speaks volumes. They often tell us that the foundation gives them confidence, a sense of belonging, and the chance to perform in the halls they have long dreamed of, alongside musicians they admire. Many emphasize how meaningful it is to be trusted and supported, and how they feel part of a unique musical family. Each album project has also been met with enthusiasm, confirming the value of giving young artists a platform to fully express themselves.

Ultimately, this support helps shape not only individual careers but also the future of classical music, nurturing a generation of artists who will carry this heritage forward with passion and responsibility.

Fondation Gautier Capuçon aims to “support the musical vocation of exceptional young artists… in the first steps of their career.” What specific challenges do these budding musicians face today that you believe the foundation is uniquely positioned to address?

Young classical musicians today face many challenges that go far beyond musical excellence. Building a career now requires navigating a complex professional environment: developing artistic projects, finding opportunities to perform, communicating with audiences, as well as maintaining a healthy balance between artistic ambition and personal well-being.

This is why the Fondation Gautier Capuçon was designed as more than a scholarship programme. Of course, financial support is essential, but what young artists often need most is guidance and opportunity. Through the foundation, we create numerous opportunities for our laureates to perform, collaborate and gain experience on stage. Concerts remain the heart of a musician’s life, and performing regularly is essential to developing confidence and artistic maturity.

At the same time, we have also developed a broader form of mentorship. In partnership with institutions such as Sciences Po Paris, our laureates can take part in workshops and meetings that help them better understand the cultural ecosystem, structure their projects and think about the long-term sustainability of their careers. Supporting young artists today means recognizing that artistic excellence must be accompanied by a wider set of skills and resources. Our ambition is to help them grow not only as musicians, but as thoughtful, engaged artists.

Beyond the individual growth of the laureates, how do you envision the Fondation Gautier Capuçon contributing to the broader landscape of classical music education and performance, both in France and internationally?

Through the Foundation’s actions, we seek to create meaningful encounters: between young musicians and established performers, between artists and audiences, and between different cultural contexts. Many of the concerts organised by the foundation take place not only in major concert halls and festivals, but also in hospitals or social care institutions, where music can reach audiences who might otherwise have little access to live performance.

Internationally, we believe music plays an important role in building cultural bridges. By supporting young artists from diverse backgrounds and encouraging them to perform across borders, the foundation contributes to a global community of musicians who share the same commitment to artistic excellence and to the power of music to connect people.

Ultimately, supporting young musicians today means investing in the future of music itself, ensuring that this living heritage continues to inspire and bring people together around the world.
