Mayotte Cyclone Chido: Fondation de France Launches Appeal for Support
On Saturday, December 14, an unprecedented cyclone struck the island of Mayotte, leaving hundreds feared dead, many injured, and causing widespread devastation, particularly to the already vulnerable housing that affects over a third of the population.
In response to this tragedy, Fondation de France has mobilised to provide immediate assistance, drawing on its experience from past disasters in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and other regions. The foundation is prioritizing essential aid, including shelter and psychological support for those most affected. It will continue to monitor and adapt its actions to meet the evolving needs of the most vulnerable populations.
Alongside government efforts, Fondation de France will focus on supporting local organisations to help families rebuild their lives by providing housing, basic goods, and restoring economic and social activities. Additionally, small artisans and farmers will receive support to restart their livelihoods. The foundation will continue to coordinate aid after the immediate relief phase to help the most vulnerable individuals return to a normal daily life.

Fondation de France has been providing post-emergency aid for over thirty years. It played a significant role after the 2004 Southeast Asia tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and the 2017 Caribbean hurricanes. Recently, it supported relief efforts in Lebanon, Ukraine, Turkey, Syria, and Morocco.
